She says that the Kauravas do not deserve forgiveness because they uttered words that can never be forgotten. Shri Krishna, who was also present, knew about Dhritarashtra's hidden and suppressed anger.
Hence, after winning the battle of Kurukshetra, when the Pandava brothers visited Dhritarashtra to take his blessings, the blinded King attempted to kill Bhima. Moreover, he wanted to punish Bhima for tearing his second son Dushasana's chest and drinking his blood. And hence, he wished to avenge Bhima for being the cause of his son's death. On the eighteenth and last day of the war, Dhritarashtra lost his eldest and dearest son Duryodhana. But that did not stop him from believing that he cultivated the unjust desire of owning something that duly belongs to someone else. Great and experienced warriors such as Bhishma, Dronacharya, Kripacharya and the learned Vidur warned Dhritarashtra about the devastating results of the battle. And with it, began the war of Kurukshetra. Years later, Hastinapur was destined to see the degeneration of human values in the form of Duryodhana's greed for power.
But Duryodhana, who was brought up with the dream of becoming the King of Hastinapur, nurtured hatred for his cousins and made several attempts to eliminate them from his path. He knew that sooner or later, he will have to appoint the eldest son of Pandu, Yudhisthir as the crown prince. And one day, when the sons of Pandu returned to Hastinapur along with their mother Kunti, Dhritarashtra started feeling insecure. And to make matters worse, his brother-in-law, Shakuni, fanned his agony, to instigate him against his brother Pandu, and his sons.ĭhritarashtra always believed that he was the rightful successor to the throne of Hastinapur without analysing whether or not he is worthy of it. And this opportunity gave him ample time to impose his dreams and ambitions on his son, Duryodhana, and make him believe that he alone has the right to succeed him. Subsequently, circumstances made him the representative of the King and let him occupy the throne of Hastinapur in the absence of Pandu. Though he didn't express his displeasure openly, he nursed resentment until it grew mammoth in size. Unable to digest the bitter truth, Dhritarashtra fostered anger and jealousy. Though he was the eldest son, his younger brother Pandu ascended the throne of Hastinapur because the one who is blind, cannot supposedly lead a nation.
One such story is of an over-ambitious King named Dhritarashtra, who was visually impaired since birth. The Mahabharata has innumerable intriguing tales to tell to the future generations.
